Learning, acting, leading together

At Mosaic  we believe that every action counts toward building a more sustainable future. We are committed to fostering a culture of environmental responsibility, empowering our students, staff, and the wider community to take meaningful steps toward sustainability.

As a city-based school, we may not have extensive green spaces on-site, but that hasn’t stopped us from taking action! Over the past two years, our students have worked beyond our school walls, integrating sustainability into their recreation times in our neighbourhood parks and playgrounds, leading litter and waste reduction initiatives that we believe have helped to keep our local environment cleaner and greener. These efforts were recognised when we proudly received the EcoSchools Green Flag for our 2022-2024 Litter and Waste Project.

🏆 Looking Back: Our Award-Winning Litter & Waste Project (2022-2024)
During our Litter and Waste Project, we took a hands-on, evidence-based approach to understanding and reducing waste in our school. Together, students and staff:

  • 📊 Surveyed and audited waste and litter
Through school-wide audits and surveys, we examined how much litter and waste we were producing, while also assessing general knowledge about the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
  • ♻ Put Actions in Place
Based on our findings, we introduced recycling collection points in every classroom, organised litter-picking initiatives in local parks and playgrounds, and took steps to improve waste management at school.
  • 🍽 Tackled Food Waste in the Canteen
Students tracked and weighed food waste during lunchtime, creating graphs and charts to analyse trends. They also learned to separate food waste from packaging to ensure that our composting remained uncontaminated. By engaging in these real-world investigations, our students became active participants in shaping a more sustainable school environment.

Our new EcoSchool project: water as our focus (2024-2026)
For the next two years, we are diving into a new sustainability theme: water. Water is a vital resource, and through this project, we aim to understand better, conserve, and manage its use within our school and beyond.

  • 🔍 Year 1: Research and auditing
Our first year (2024-2025) will focus on researching and auditing how we currently use water in our school. Through whole-school surveys, data collection, and real-life observations, we will gain a clearer picture of our water consumption habits. This evidence will help us shape an informed and impactful action plan to be implemented from summer 2025 onward.
  • 💧Year 2: action and lasting change
Starting from summer 2025, we will put our action plan into place—testing solutions, raising awareness, and ensuring that our efforts lead to real and measurable improvements in our school’s water sustainability. By the end of the academic year in June 2026, we hope to see our actions result in lasting changes that will be carried forward in the years to come.
  • 🤝 Collaboration at every level
Sustainability is a shared effort. Our EcoSchool Committee—made up of students, teachers, staff, and parents—will work together to analyse research findings and shape our next steps. Information and insights will be shared through student and teacher representatives, ensuring that every class and level actively participates.
  • 🌍 A global perspective, local impact
Our EcoSchool project is developed in collaboration with EcoSchools, J’aime ma planete, and the ISP ILOS Changemakers program, organisations dedicated to promoting environmental education and action. Through these partnerships, we will connect with sustainability initiatives beyond our school, broadening our learning and impact.
  • 💡 Beyond the classroom: taking action in our communities
This project isn’t just about making changes within our school—it’s about empowering students, staff, and families to take their learning beyond the school walls. As co-researchers, we hope to extend our water conservation efforts into our communities and homes, encouraging responsible water use in daily life. Through this shared journey, both children and adults alike will develop a deeper understanding of water sustainability and contribute to a more environmentally conscious future.

Looking Ahead
As we move forward with this project, we are excited to see how our collective efforts will make a difference. We invite students, staff, families, and local organisations to engage with us, share ideas, and support our mission to create a school community that leads by example in sustainability.

Stay tuned for updates on our sustainability journey!
